Reports, not radar. This map counts ground-truth observations: someone saw hail and reported its size. Radar-estimated hail maps (which many services sell) infer hail from reflectivity and can show hail where none fell, or miss hail under a weak return. The two are complementary; IDOLCheck pages show both — verified reports here and radar snapshots on each county's storm log.
Population bias is real. Dense counties have more spotters, so they report more. A quiet rural county next to a hot suburban one often saw the same storm. That is why the address-level check matters more than the county shade.
Size vs. frequency. One 3" stone is a bigger event than ten 1" reports, but the ten reports shade hotter here. Use the Largest column above and the size leaderboards on state pages for severity.
Where the boundaries come from. County shapes are US Census Bureau cartographic boundaries (1:20,000,000). Alaska and Hawaii are inset at the standard Albers-USA positions.
Each county is shaded by the number of verified hail reports filed with the NOAA Storm Prediction Center over the last 12 months. Reports come from trained spotters, emergency managers, and National Weather Service offices and record the largest hailstone observed. Click any shaded county for its day-by-day storm log.
SPC reports depend on someone observing and reporting the hail. Small or brief hail in rural areas is often never filed. NWS warnings that cited hail also appear on the county pages, and an address-level check in the app tests whether a property was inside a hail-warned polygon.
County data refreshes from HailyDB every few hours and the window rolls forward daily. Events from the most recent 30 days are counted here but shown at county level only; exact dates and locations unlock after 30 days, or immediately in the IDOLCheck app.
